New Urbanist Solutions for Global Warming

New Urbanism website has some solutions for global warming... seem drastic but they are all good ideas.

10 SOLUTIONS that are feasible, healthy, and sustainable:

1. An immediate and permanent moratorium on all new road construction and expansions.

2. An immediate and permanent moratorium on all new airport construction and expansions, as well as an end to all aviation subsidies. In addition, an end to the huge oil industry subsidies ($300 billion per year world wide).

3. A huge increase in funding for Amtrak and the immediate construction of a nationwide new train network across America connecting every city, town, and neighborhood with an efficient, state-of-the-art electric train network comparable to what is currently operating all across Europe and Japan. This should be built to transport both passengers and all the cargo now moved by very inefficient trucks.

The Week in Sustainable Mobility 3/26/06

The worldchanging blog has it's "The Week in Sustainable Mobility" for 3/26/06 which is a news roundup...

Here is a sample of the stories found there:

In the US, Accuweather forecast that the northeast US coast could be the target of a major hurricane, perhaps as early as this season. The forecast suggests that in terms of number of storms, the 2006 hurricane season will be more active than normal, but less active than last summer’s historic storm season.

Researchers at Georgia Tech applied a new methodology to the analysis of global hurricane data and concluded that the increasing trend in the number of category 4 and 5 hurricanes for the period 1970 to 2004 is directly linked to the trend in rising sea surface temperatures.
